I would most respectfully request you to permit me to point out that though there appears to be a difference when the difference is considered, I have only accepted the salary of £460 per annum with the Government's permission being granted.

The Secretary of State is acting on the understanding that I might be granted the allowance at the back, as the Jardine Matheson & Co. shows that from the flux, the salary was garnished. At that time, the dollar salary was about £12, and the allowance commands the widows and orphans' pension fund for the deceased.

At the starting salary, the Government contributed £18.8.0 to the contributions, and this is taken into consideration. The kindness and welfare benefits beyond £3.12 per head are considered.

With the present tendency in the price of living, there is a small margin allowed by the Government. I have to believe that the Secretary of State will appreciate it. I draw attention to the fact that the cost of living is appreciable.
